Meet Lieutenant Matthew McPhail

Office of Operations - Central Command

Lieutenant Matt McPhail joined the Sacramento Police Department in 2005. As an officer, he worked assignments in patrol as well as within the department’s Crime Analysis Unit and Public Information Office. He returned to patrol as a supervisor after being promoted to Sergeant in 2017 and would go on to serve in the department’s Employee Services Unit, the central city’s Bike Patrol Team, and overseeing operations within the Evidence and Property section. In 2024, Matt was promoted to Lieutenant and has served as a Watch Commander in our Central Command. Since 2012, Matt has also represented the department as a member of the Sacramento Police Department Honor Guard.

Matt earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Forensic Chemistry from California State University, Sacramento and his Masters of Science in Criminal Justice from Grand Canyon University. He has graduated from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership institute and the POST Supervisors Course.

Matt has been awarded a Sacramento Police Department unit citation for his role on the honor guard, a department Medal of Valor for meritorious action during an armed home invasion, and twice been recognized as Employee of the Quarter.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys doing home improvement projects, playing softball with his daughters and traveling to new places with his family.
