Transportation Maintenance

The Transportation Division maintains various traffic control devices. The Signal and Lighting Maintenance and the Signs and Markings Maintenance are the sections in the division responsible for maintaining the field infrastructure used on our 3,000 miles of roadway to insure safe operation for roadway users.

Signal and lighting

The Signal and Lighting Maintenance Group maintains all traffic signals, streetlight and warning beacons in the City. Maintenance staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to traffic signal emergencies. They respond to approximately 3200 requests for service a year. On average they respond to 150 service calls for equipment damaged by collision.

Over the past 15 years the city has transitioned to video detection at a significant number of signalized intersections, which has helped accommodate different road users such as bicyclists, reduce the maintenance calls, and improve safety. The City has replaced approximately 95% of older incandescent traffic signal light bulbs with LED displays and has converted approximately 70% of streetlights to LED.

All new street lighting projects are standardized to LED lighting. The LED updates are a significant step toward energy conservation and annual cost savings.
