Meet Lieutenant Joshua Dobson

Lieutenant Joshua Dobson was raised in San Lorenzo, California, and joined the Sacramento Police Department on February 16th, 1998. He is currently assigned to the Internal Affairs Unit in the Office of the Chief. He was previously assigned to Investigative Services where he managed several units, including Forensic Investigations, Evidence & Property, the Real Time Crime Center, and the Records Division. He has also served as a patrol watch commander, and during his career Joshua has had an opportunity to serve at all three neighborhood patrol substations.

As an officer, he served in patrol, field training, and the SWAT Team. In 2012, Joshua was promoted to sergeant. In this capacity he led patrol teams and supervised the K9 unit. This included working with two K9 partners, “Ace” and “Jax”.

In 2019, Joshua was promoted to Lieutenant, and was assigned to oversee patrol during late watch.

He was assigned to William J Kinney Facility (North Division) however, Joshua’s late watch supervisory duties extended throughout the entire city.

Joshua’s duties have offered him a multitude of advanced training and experience managing critical incidents. He is passionate about sharing that knowledge with new officers, supervisors, and our community. He is a P.O.S.T. certified instructor that has been recognized by the department and the community for promoting and educating the public regarding police response to emergencies. He continues to lecture at houses of worship, businesses, and schools on issues that affect the safety and well-being of our citizens. He has been the recipient of numerous commendations and awards to include two Unit Citations, a Life-Saving Award, a Distinguished Service Award, the Bronze Medal of Valor, and the Silver Medal of Valor.

Joshua volunteers with several Sacramento non-profits. He is an honorary member of East Sacramento Rotary Club and has worked in partnership with Sacramento Law Enforcement Chaplaincy and the Sacramento Canine Association to form and successfully implement the community outreach event “Sacramento Run with the Cops 5K” for the past five years.

Joshua holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Chico. After police internships with the Chico Police Department and the San Leandro Police Department, Joshua chose a career with Sacramento Police after quickly growing fond of the region, the community, and the opportunities that the Sacramento Police Department offered.

When off-duty Joshua is an avid runner, reader, and fitness enthusiast who enjoys spending time with his wife, children, dogs, and friends.
