2026 Backpack Giveaway
August 2026
Mayor McCarty, Vice Mayor Talamantes, and Assemblymember Krell give away 2,466 free backpacks and 17 bikes in South Natomas
On Wednesday, July 29, Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes, in partnership with Assemblymember Maggy Krell, hosted their fourth annual Backpack Giveaway from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at Northgate Park.
The event included free backpacks and school supplies, as well as books, food, haircuts, games, a bounce house, bike raffles, and local resources.
“This event is one of our favorite traditions; it’s an opportunity to get out in the community and set kids across Sacramento up for success in the new school year. We make it a priority to have a variety of bikes and backpacks so that kids of all ages can find something that feels like them. With high costs and inflation, many families might not otherwise be able to afford new backpacks and school supplies,” said Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty. “Thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors for helping us bring joy to so many local kids.”

"We know families are stretching every dollar right now, and the cost of getting kids ready for school can add up quickly. That's why this event is so important to me. It's about helping families where we can, making sure every student has thSe supplies they need, and setting Sacramento students up for success as they head into the new school year,” said Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes.
"We loved participating in this important and fun event to make sure students in the Northgate area have backpacks and are ready to go for the school year!" said Assemblymember Maggy Krell.
The Backpack Giveaway will return next year with even more bikes and backpacks.
