Meet Captain Clayton Buchanan

Office of the Chief - Administrative Services Division

Captain Clayton Buchanan began his career with the Sacramento Police Department in 2008. He has held assignments in Patrol, Regional Transit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Explosive Detection Canine Handler, Patrol Sergeant for Districts two and six, the Professional Standards Unit, and Executive Lieutenant with North Command. In December 2023, Clayton was promoted to Captain. He currently oversees the Administrative Services Division in the Office of the Chief.

Prior to the police department, Clayton served 10 years as a US Navy Master Explosive Ordnance Technician, eventually obtaining the rank of First-Class Petty Officer (E6).

Clayton earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Emergency Service Management from the Union Institute & University. His professional development classes include the Sacramento Police Department Front Line Leadership Course, POST Supervisor School, and Naval Enlisted Leadership Course.

Clayton has been awarded two Unit Citations for his work in Regional Transit and as the Bomb Squad Commander. He also was recognized as Employee of the Quarter two times. When Clayton is not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, playing golf with his son, and woodworking.
