Fleet Green Initiatives

The City of Sacramento Public Works Fleet Division is committed to helping departments deliver vital City services while still being good stewards of our environment. That means establishing a “ZEV First” policy to replace internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle with zero-emission vehicles, using the latest technology to monitor vehicle mileage, and use alternative fuels such as renewable-diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) to provide cleaner burning options to heavy-duty operations.

Electric vehicles

The City currently has over 120 electric vehicles in use, and every year we are working to replace aging internal combustion vehicles (ICE) with clean zero-emissions electric vehicles. Most of our EV units are Chevy Bolts but beginning in 2023 we will be purchasing the new Ford F150 Lightnings and also testing an all-electric refuse truck.

Hybrid / alternative fuels

In addition to electrifying our fleet, the City has long been a leader in using alternatives fuels to reduce our carbon footprint. We currently use renewable-diesel in all of our diesel powered vehicles, and CNG or LNG in all our refuse trucks on the road.

Fleet technology

The City uses Samsara to gather valuable data in real-time from our vehicles and help prevent major breakdowns, and better understand how vehicles are used.
