The treasured Filoli estate with its renowned gardens and grand 20th century mansion is the picture of Old World grandeur, gentility, and serenity. Filoli was built in 1917 for William Bowers Bourne II, heir to California’s Empire Mine gold fortune. Though William and his wife, Agnes, thought of Filoli as a humble country place. This lavish estate consists of a 36,000 square foot Georgian lavish country mansion and a 16 acre English garden. The estate is the last of its kind dating back to when San Francisco’s richest families built to dazzle. Enjoy a tour of the country house and an introduction to the gardens. What is especially in bloom in July? ROSES! During the summer, more than 500 rose bushes, representing 150 varieties, burst into bloom at Filoli. Enjoy some lunch in the Café or bring your own lunch and eat in the picnic area.
