Meet Lieutenant Jon Houston

Office of Operations – North Command

Lieutenant Jon Houston began his public safety career with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, serving as a firefighter and EMT. In 1999, after earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento, he joined the Sacramento Police Department.

Across his tenure, Jon Houston has held assignments including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, Alcoholic Beverage Control Liaison Officer, Neighborhood Crimes Detective, Gang Investigations Detective, and Auto Theft Detective. He is also a member of the SPD Peer Support Team.

Promoted to Sergeant in July 2021, Jon Houston supervised patrol teams, led the Downtown Core Bike Unit, and later served as an Internal Affairs Investigator. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February 2026 and currently serves as a Watch Commander for the North Command.

In addition, he serves as an SPD LGBTQ Community Liaison representative, supporting outreach, training, and accreditation efforts for the department’s liaison program.

He has completed extensive professional training, including the SPD Front Line Leadership Course, the POST Supervisor Course, and the Supervisor Leadership Institute. His service has been recognized through three Unit Citations and two Life Saving Medals.

Originally from the Redding area and a second-generation law enforcement professional, Jon enjoys the outdoors, traveling, including international trips, and attending 49ers football games around the country. He is an avid cyclist and supports departmental rides and Police Unity Tour participation.
