Meet Captain Brent Kaneyuki

Office of Specialized Services - Metro Division

Captain Brent Kaneyuki grew up in a military family, living in places including the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado; Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa, Japan; and the former McClellan Air Force Base, California. Before beginning his law enforcement career with the Sacramento Police Department, Brent served as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army and California Army National Guard.

Brent graduated from the Sacramento Police Academy in 2002. He served as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Violent Crimes Reduction Officer, and Academy Corporal. He promoted to Sergeant in 2013. His assignments included Patrol Sergeant, Field Training Sergeant, Crime Suppression/Problem-Oriented Policing Sergeant, and Academy Sergeant. Brent promoted to Lieutenant in 2019, serving in Patrol Operations (Watch Commander) within Community Advancement (Outreach, Recruiting, and Youth Services) and the Personnel Services Division (PSD).

In December 2023, he promoted to Captain, taking command of the Metro Division.

Brent has been a Sacramento Police Honor Guard Member since 2006. He is also an Adjunct Professor with American River College (Sacramento Regional Public Safety Training Center Academy and Administration of Justice Programs). Brent is a POST-Certified Firearms, Defensive Tactics, and Physical Training Instructor. Additionally, he is the President of the Sacramento Asian Peace Officers Association (APOA).

Brent has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego. He graduated from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (Class 384), POST Command College (Class 69), and the Executive Development Course (EDC 2022). Brent’s Department Awards include two Unit Citations, the Physical Fitness Award and Employee of the Quarter.

Brent and his wife Veronica have two adult children and two grandsons, whom he enjoys spending time with during his time off. He has run 25 marathons, including four Boston Marathons.
