How To Use Residential Parking Permits

Displaying permits

Visitor Permits and Temporary Permits are in the form of a placard that must be placed on the driver's side of the vehicle dashboard and facing up to ensure it is visible through the windshield. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) should not be obstructed by the placard placement.

Virtual Vehicle Permits utilize the vehicle's license plate number as a credential. The vehicle's license plate number should be visible from the street and not obstructed or covered by any material.

Basic permit use policies

Vehicles utilizing any type of residential parking permit may:

  • Park within three city blocks from the registered permit address: The permit is only valid for spaces on the street where the posted signage reflects the permit area letter.  Permits may not be used any distance farther than three city blocks, regardless of whether the posted signage reflects the same permit area.  A map of all permit area parking is available online.
  • Park for free at any on-street meter up to 72 hours: Vehicle must still be parked within three city blocks from the registered permit address and at a space with signage reflecting the permit area letter.
  • Park at any non-metered space up to 72 hours: this applies only to spaces within three city blocks from the registered permit address.
  • No exemption for "No Parking" regulations: These are signs in red font that prohibit parking and includes signs that prohibit parking during specific times and days.

Where parking is prohibited

A residential permit only provides exemptions to meter payments and posted time limited spaces. However, it does not provide an exemption to the following spaces:

  • Fire lanes or at fire hydrants: Painted red curbs
  • Passenger loading zones: Painted white curbs intended for 5-minute passenger loading and unloading.
  • Limited time spaces: 15-minute or 30-minutes spaces, usually curbs are painted green.
  • Disabled Person Parking spaces: Painted blue curbs or posted with DP signage.
  • Commercial loading zones: Painted yellow curbs intended for delivery vehicles.
  • Spaces posted with signs reflecting the words, "No Parking": These signs are in red font and prohibit parking during specific times and days.
  • In alleys
  • In other RPP areas: RPP signs that do not reflect the area for the registered permit
  • More than three city blocks from registered permit address
  • On streets not posted for RPP

Disabled Person parking in residential permit areas

Vehicles displaying a valid California Disabled Person Placard or Disabled Person license plate are exempt from residential permit requirements. This applies to both residents and visitors. Drivers with DP credentials may also park for free at on-street meters and beyond posted time limits throughout the city of Sacramento.

Exceptions:

  • 72-hour law: Drivers cannot park at the same space on the street beyond this time.
  • Passenger loading zones: White curbs intended for passenger loading and unloading.
  • Fire lanes or hydrants: Curbs marked with red paint or where hydrants are present.
  • Spaces posted with sign reflecting the words, "No Parking": No vehicles may park at these spaced during posted days or hours.
  • Other household members and visitors: Only the vehicles with valid DP credentials are exempt. All other vehicles are required to abide by posted time limits or utilize the appropriate residential permit.
