The City's Department of Utilities offers rebates on irrigation upgrades, such as converting sprinkler nozzles to high-efficiency nozzles, converting traditional sprinkler systems to drip irrigation systems, or upgrading to a smart irrigation controller.

Residents who receive City of Sacramento water service and are the property owner or bill-paying tenants who have written consent from the property owner can apply.

Single-family and duplexes

Eligible single-family and duplex customers can receive:

  • Up to $400 for materials used to upgrade current irrigation systems to drip irrigation or high-efficiency system
  • Up to $400 for upgrading to an EPA WaterSense-certified smart irrigation controller
  • Up to $150 for licensed-contractor labor costs

Multi-family and businesses

Eligible multi-family and business customers can receive:

  • Up to $50,000 for irrigation materials used to upgrade or convert to water-efficient systems, which includes up to $700 for installing each WaterSense-labeled smart irrigation controller
  • Up to 20 percent of the total project's reimbursable amount for licensed-contractor labor costs

How to apply

  1. Submit an online or printed application
  2. Wait for approval from water conservation staff
  3. Schedule a pre-inspection before beginning your project
  4. Complete the upgrade and submit receipts and completed project photos
  5. Schedule a post-inspection with water conservation staff
  6. Receive your rebate check

Rebates for smart controllers are not retroactive. It is the customer’s responsibility to be aware of all program requirements. Projects underway or completed prior to pre-inspection are not eligible.
