Little Saigon Gateway Project
Project description
Sacramento is home to one of the most diverse immigrant communities in the United States. Since the 1980’s, many Vietnamese families and businesses have established roots along the Stockton Boulevard corridor. Former Councilmember and current Mayor Kevin McCarty first championed the district’s official recognition, which led to the City of Sacramento formally designating the area as Little Saigon in 2010 in recognition of its vibrant culture and economic activity.
This project builds upon years of community advocacy and civic support. To recognize, activate, and revitalize the community as well as welcome visitors to the cultural experiences, education, restaurants, services, businesses, and community, the City established a capital improvement project, Little Saigon Gateway Project, to implement a gateway feature at a location in Sacramento’s Little Saigon community on Stockton Boulevard, between Riza Avenue and 47th Avenue.
Benefits
A Little Saigon gateway would serve as a meaningful landmark that honors the history, resilience, and cultural contributions of the Vietnamese community who made this area their home. Beyond its cultural significance, the gateway would act as a visible public investment that strengthens neighborhood identity, instills community pride as well as economic revitalization and sought-after destination along Stockton Boulevard.
Costs and funding
The State of California awarded grant funds to the City through Senate Bill 104, Budget Act of 2023, for various community reinvestment projects within the City. The California Natural Resources Agency is the lead state agency overseeing program and administering the grant funds received.
The City received $1,805,000 in state grant funds through the community reinvestment program. The grant funds will be used to deliver the project including public engagement and outreach, preliminary engineering, design, right-of-way, and construction, with an additional $395,000 contributed through local funding.
