North 5th Street Parallel Trunk Main Project

The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities will install about 1,400 feet of a new 72-inch storm drain trunk main — a large drain pipe — parallel to the existing pipe line along North 5th Street, north of Richards Boulevard, to improve drainage in the area.

The existing pipe, which carries stormwater to the Sump 111 pump station, does not have enough capacity during heavy storms.

Intense rainfall can cause water to back up in the system and increase the risk of flooding in nearby areas.

The new trunk main will improve stormwater flow and reduce flooding throughout the River District.

Schedule

Construction is anticipated to begin in July and last through December 2026.

Impact

Construction will take place within public streets and sidewalks. During this time, drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, nearby businesses, public facilities, and residents may experience temporary impacts.

Expected impacts include temporary lane closures on North 5th Street, particularly in the westbound and southbound lanes, as well as temporary no-parking zones, construction noise and increased traffic in the area.

Some nearby businesses and facilities may experience temporary driveway access changes, and pedestrians may be detoured around active work areas affecting sidewalks.

The City will coordinate with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, nearby businesses, and residential property managers throughout construction.
