PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project is located on Broadway in Oak Park, between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Stockton Boulevard. This segment of roadway has a history of crashes and is on the City’s Vision Zero High Injury Network, which indicates that it is one of the streets with high numbers of serious injury or fatality crashes. Broadway was evaluated as part of the Vision Zero Top 5 Corridors study, which identified the causes of serious crashes and recommended treatments and roadway modifications to reduce the likelihood of collisions. Broadway has four lanes but lacks a center turn lane and bike lanes. This can lead to speeding and unsafe passing, making it hard for pedestrians and cyclists. The proposed project will reduce the vehicle lanes from four to two, add a center turn lane, and create separated bike lanes with a striped buffer.

BENEFITS

The Broadway Vision Zero project aims to reduce injury and fatality crashes, and to enhance the safety and convenience of pedestrians and cyclists. This plan includes several features, such as reducing the number of travel lanes, upgrading the existing bike lanes to buffered bike lanes, and installing pedestrian crossing improvements.

• Speeding is the primary cause of injury and fatality crashes in Sacramento. The Vision Zero Action Plan identifies reducing lanes (also referred to as a “road diet”) as the most efficient method to deter speeding.
• Providing a two-way center turn lane reduces rear-end collisions and improves the efficiency of traffic flow
• Buffered bike lanes provide separation for people on bicycles from moving traffic, which is more comfortable for many riders

This project is part of a larger vision for Broadway, which includes:

• The Broadway Complete Street Project (between I-5 and SR-99)
• The Envision Broadway in Oak Park Project (between SR-99 and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd)

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Broadway Vision Zero Plan, part of the Vision Zero Top 5 Corridors Plan, was developed through community engagement. During the design phase, the project will continue to involve community members by providing information about its goals, benefits, and limitations. Key stakeholders include property owners, local businesses, neighborhood representatives, community organizations, advocates for active transportation, schools, and faith communities.

Workshop April 2024: Broadway Vision Zero (Martin Luther King Blvd to Stockton Blvd)

The City of Sacramento held a community meeting on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, to gather public input on the Broadway Vision Zero Project. The City and project team presented updated alternatives at the meeting and collected community feedback on various project elements. The main objective of the meeting was to inform community members and gather input on proposed safety enhancements for the section of Broadway between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Stockton Boulevard in Sacramento. The meeting occurred at The Ray Robinson Salvation Army Oak Park Community Center, 2540 Alhambra Boulevard, and was attended by sixty-five (65) community members.
