Summary
On Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 1:13 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department received a report of a male black in his twenties, accompanied by a detailed physical description walking down the street with a gun in his hand near the area of 20th Avenue and 36th Street. Additional information was obtained that the subject appeared to have been in an altercation and had a ripped shirt.
Patrol officers were immediately dispatched to the call and responded. Two additional officers assigned to the department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) were in the area when they overheard the call being dispatched over the radio. Due to the proximity of the call, they responded to the area to assist patrol officers. These officers were in an unmarked sedan, wearing marked “Police” tactical uniforms when they arrived at the call.
Upon arrival, they observed a male adult matching the description given by the caller in the area of 38th Street and 20th Avenue. The officers attempted to contact the suspect who immediately fled on foot to evade officers. One of the officers chased the suspect on foot, the other pursued him in a vehicle.
The officer gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop the gun. Instead, the suspect produced the handgun and pointed it at the officer. In response, the officer fired a total of five rounds at the suspect, none of which struck him. Once the shots were fired, the suspect continued to run to a nearby yard on 38th Street and surrendered to officers. Officers approached the suspect and safely took him into custody without incident. Once the suspect was detained in handcuffs, officers located a loaded silver revolver in the immediate proximity of the suspect.
The suspect has been identified as 26-year old, Clifton Allison. He was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on various charges including assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
Homicide detectives, Internal Affairs, Office of Public Safety Accountability and Crime Scene Investigation Units responded to the scene to begin the officer-involved shooting investigation. As part of the department’s protocol, this incident is being investigated in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Sacramento City Attorney’s Office and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability.
The officer involved has 10 years on the department. None of the officers involved were injured in this incident. Per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave.
