Summary
On Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2:01 p.m., officers from the Sacramento Police Department’s North Gang Enforcement Team (NGET) and Post Release Community Supervision Unit (PRCS) were conducting surveillance on 28-year old Armani Lee, in the area of Del Paso Boulevard and Land Avenue. Lee was wanted for a parole violation and was additionally wanted by the Sacramento Police Department for a shooting that occurred in North Sacramento on February 4, 2017. Officers had been provided information that Lee was in possession of a firearm.
As officers were surveilling the location, Lee was observed exiting a residence on Land Avenue. He began walking north on Land Avenue and turned south on Del Paso Boulevard. Undercover officers conducting surveillance, positively identified Lee and requested additional officers to arrest him.
Marked and unmarked police vehicles approached Lee in an attempt to take him into custody. As they were approaching Lee he saw the officers and fled on foot, north on Del Paso Boulevard.
As Lee fled, officers saw him pull out a black handgun and fire multiple rounds at a marked police K9 vehicle approaching on Land Avenue. The K9 officer ducked down in his vehicle to avoid being shot, however his vehicle was struck multiple times by Lee’s gunfire.
The K9 officer exited his patrol vehicle, drew his firearm and fired multiple rounds at the suspect as he fled on foot. Three additional officers fired at Lee as he shot at the K9 officer and other approaching officers.
Lee was struck multiple times and was taken into custody. He was transported by the Sacramento Fire Department to a local area hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Officers located a black handgun in the immediate proximity of Lee.
Homicide detectives, Internal Affairs, and Crime Scene Investigation Units responded to the scene to begin the officer-involved shooting investigation. As part of the department’s protocol, this incident is being investigated in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Sacramento City Attorney’s Office and the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability. Representatives from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department will be monitoring the investigation.
The three Sacramento Police Officers involved have 11, 18 and 19 years on the department. The Sacramento County Sheriff Deputy involved has 11 years on the department. None of the officers involved were injured in this incident.
