Extreme heat is one of the most pressing climate challenges facing our community. Rising temperatures put residents — especially children, seniors, and outdoor workers — at greater risk for heat-related illness, increase household cooling costs, and can worsen air quality. The City is committed to making our neighborhoods safer, more comfortable, and more resilient through planning, design, and policy action.
The Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP) includes policy direction to create built environments that reduce exposure to extreme heat and mitigate urban heat island effect, focused on integrating cooling strategies into the way we design and build our city. The City of Sacramento recently partnered with Sacramento County and participated in the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Sacramento Technical Assistance Leadership Exchange Program focused on extreme heat solutions for our region. ULI convened a panel of experts in planning, urban forestry, public health, and economic development to explore actionable strategies to cool our community.
