Bike Parking Requests
Bike Parking in the Public Right-of-Way
The City of Sacramento will install bike racks and shared-rideable drop zones in the public right-of-way where there is a demonstrated need. This area is owned and maintained by the City, and typically includes the street and the concrete sidewalk up until the property line.
Here are the criteria for installations in the public right-of-way:
- Publicly Accessible. All requests must be for publicly accessible, neighborhood-serving destinations such as businesses, community centers, parks, multifamily residential buildings, etc.*
- Demonstrated need. There must be a demand for bike parking at this location, demonstrated through multiple requests or a lack of existing bike parking nearby.
- Site Requirements. The area must have enough space to install a bike rack while maintaining a six-foot path of travel, in addition to minimum width from curbs, walls, and street furniture. (See the Bike Parking Design and Placement Standards for more details.)
- For areas which do not have enough sidewalk, an on-street corral may be possible.
- All on-street corrals must have a sponsor that signs an agreement to maintain the corral (e.g. sweeping, notifying the City of damaged or missing racks).
- On-street corrals are not eligible in metered parking spaces, ADA-reserved parking spaces, or on streets which otherwise have a high demand for vehicle parking.
Installations on Private Property
The City is piloting a program to install bike parking on private property for eligible neighborhood-serving destinations in an effort to expand bike parking beyond the central city.
Eligibility requirements are as follows:
- Must be located in an Opportunity Area.
- Must be a publicly accessible, neighborhood-serving destination such as a storefront, restaurant, community center, or event space.
- Priority is given to locations with multi-modal connections, such as nearby bike lanes or transit stops.
How to submit a Bike Parking Request
Step 1. Make sure you read and understand the sections above.
Step 2. Submit the "Bike Parking Request" form. Request will be subject to an eligibility screening ensuring the request meets the qualifying criteria described above. Applicants will be notified shortly after submission of a completed application.
If the application meets the qualifying criteria, City staff will arrange an on-site consultation to evaluate the site area and verify that the qualifying criteria have been met.
Please note:
- Requests are not guaranteed;
- Review time typically takes about 2 weeks; and
- Installation times may vary - the same City team who installs bike racks is also responsible for thousands of other projects including stop signs, curb painting, and other safety infrastructure.
