The City of Sacramento’s Last Mile Broadband Internet Access project is expanding high-speed fiber internet service to over 1,500 homes in eligible underserved neighborhoods. Whether you work from home, attend school online, stream entertainment or want to stay connected with loved ones, reliable internet access helps improve everyday life. As of summer 2026, construction to install the fiber internet infrastructure has started in approved neighborhoods. Project Overview
Funded through California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) grants and other state and federal funding, the Last Mile Broadband Internet Access project supports the City’s Digital Strategy by increasing access to fast, reliable internet service.
What to Expect
To provide equitable fiber internet access to more Sacramento residents, the first step is constructing the infrastructure in eligible neighborhoods that have been identified as underserved for internet access. Establishing the network involves laying underground fiber optic cables and adding utility boxes within utility easements. In various neighborhoods, these construction activities are either completed, currently underway or planned. The City’s project also includes installing underground fiber optic cable from the new utility boxes up to individual residences, if the owner/property manager/resident opts in. This does not start fiber broadband service at the home, but is free of charge during this City project and sets up the property to be able to start fiber broadband quickly and easily if deciding to start service in the future.
Project Locations
The City of Sacramento used geographic and demographic data on access to high-speed internet to identify neighborhoods that are underserved with this essential resource and prioritize these communities for priority installation of fiber optic broadband infrastructure through the Last Mile Broadband Internet Access project. Schedule
The project will be completed in three phases as shown below. The City will continue providing updates regarding construction schedules, information on route adjustments, potential disruptions and key milestones.
- Phase 1 Design: Planning, engineering and permitting
- Phase 2 Construction: Installation of underground fiber infrastructure throughout eligible neighborhoods. Property owners and tenants will be contacted by our project team directly.
- Phase 3 Residential Connections: Once construction is complete in eligible neighborhoods, residents in those locations may schedule installation and activate fiber internet service with Fidium Fiber. If you are a resident of one of the identified neighborhoods and have expressed interest in starting fiber broadband service, you will be contacted by Fidium Fiber, the internet service provider.
