The Sacramento Police Department (SPD) Research, Training, and Employee Development Division is committed to providing the highest caliber education and training to our employees, consistent with best practice, policy, and the law. In an effort to pursue the highest level of transparency for the community we post our education and training materials presented to our officers.
This page contains archived curriculum and educational materials. In addition to the materials and outlines available below, digital student workbooks are also made available on the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) website.
Advanced Officer Training (AOT)
The AOT team is comprised of 5-7 officers and is part of the In-Service Training Unit. The In-Service Training Unit has one sergeant, an In-Service Training Coordinator and a Head Rangemaster. The direction of the unit is to provide and/or facilitate trainings within, or outside of, the Sacramento Police Department.
Continued Professional Training (CPT)
Per POST, sworn officers are required to attend a minimum of 24 hours of CPT every two years. At SPD, officers receive 40 hours every year.
In-Service Training (IST)
IST includes any and all training that officers receive after they graduate the academy.
Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)
This comprehensive course focuses on personal force protection, mobility, vehicle dynamics, recovery techniques, and defensive and offensive driving maneuvers necessary for safe and effective emergency response in law enforcement.
Defensive Tactics Course (DTAC)
This course encompasses a range of techniques and strategies that police officers use to protect themselves and others during confrontations
