The Youth Development Administration is charged with refining, developing, and promoting the City’s overall strategic vision to achieve citywide youth development goals in accord with the Youth Plan. The Youth Plan guides the City in the design, operations and evaluation of its children and youth program investments, with a concerted application of resources toward young people in greatest need. The Youth Plan outlines goals from cradle-to-career, as well as a framework for integrating youth program quality at scale through common evidence-informed practices.
The Youth Development Administration is responsible for overseeing the direction of City youth programs and distributing funds to Community-Based Organizations to support a network of children- and youth-serving programs that align with the Youth Plan.
October 13, 2016 – Law and Legislation Committee reviewed an Ordinance establishing a Department of Youth and the Sacramento Children’s Fund. They passed a Motion to send the issue to the City Council.
February 7, 2017 – Council directs City staff to investigate and report back on “systemic and comprehensive approaches to address opportunities for investment in our youth.”
April 18, 2017 – City Manager’s Office (CMO) and Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment (YPCE) provides updates to the Council regarding their investigation. In that update, it was announced that a new Youth Development department would likely be rolled out on July 1, 2017. October 3, 2017 – CMO presents the Youth Plan to the City Council and gathers feedback from the Council.
December 19, 2017 – Citywide Youth Plan was adopted by a City Council vote (9-0).
July 2018 – First Youth Development Manager hired, and Office of Youth Development is established.
May – July, 2023 – Office of Youth Development transitions under YPCE as the Youth Development Administration.
