Kevin McCarty was elected Sacramento’s 57th mayor in November 2024. His priorities include addressing homelessness, expanding affordable housing, enhancing public safety, promoting economic development, and supporting youth.

From 2014 to 2024, McCarty represented Sacramento in the California State Assembly, where he chaired the Budget Committee on Education Finance and the Public Safety Committee. He helped advance historic investments in public education and college access and focused on practical approaches to gun violence, retail theft, drug addiction, and prison reentry programs.

McCarty authored more than 90 successful legislative measures, including the Universal Preschool Act, the High School Financial Literacy Law, the American River Parkway Conservancy, independent investigations of police shootings, and voting rights for formerly incarcerated individuals.

A lifelong Sacramentan, McCarty began his public service career as a Housing and Redevelopment Commissioner before serving on the Sacramento City Council. He earned his high school diploma through adult education, attended American River College, and earned degrees from California State University, Long Beach, and California State University, Sacramento.
