Meet Lieutenant Lai Lai Bui

Lieutenant Lai Lai Bui grew up in Sacramento after immigrating to the United States with her family from Vietnam. She graduated from Hiram Johnson High School and went on to Colorado State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

Lai Lai began her career with the Sacramento Police Department at 19 years old as a Student Trainee. She entered the police academy at 21 years old. Lai Lai has worked in Patrol, POP, Narcotics, Vice, SACA, Crime Analysis, Internal Affairs, Bikes, and as a Watch Commander. She also served as a Commissioner on the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training for 17 years. Lai Lai was a member of the SPOA Board of Directors for 5 years, and currently serves as the Vice President of the Asian Peace Officers Association.

Lai Lai is the recipient of two Employee of the Quarter Awards, three Unit Citation Awards, and she received the California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus Excellence in Law Enforcement Award in 2007.

Outside of work, Lai Lai enjoys gardening, travelling, and volunteering at her son’s school.
