Meet Deputy Chief Greg Halstead

Office of Investigations 

Deputy Chief Greg Halstead joined the Sacramento Police Department in 1996 as a Student Trainee and became a police officer in 1998. He worked as a Neighborhood Police Officer (NPO) from 2002 to 2004, assigned to the New Helvetia and Seavey Circle housing developments. He was a Detective from 2004 to 2015. As a Sergeant, Greg led patrol teams and the Marijuana Compliance Team until promoting to Lieutenant in 2018. As Lieutenant, Greg has been a Watch Commander, Executive Lieutenant out of the South Command, and later led the Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Units. After promoting to Captain, Greg served as the East Area Commander and later led the Detective Division, which includes Major Crimes, Investigative Services, Forensics, Evidence and Property, and Records. In November 2023, Greg was promoted to Deputy Chief. He currently oversees the Office of Investigations.

Greg attended Sacramento State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 1999. He received a Master of Arts degree in Executive Leadership from Liberty University in 2020.

Greg is the recipient of the Sacramento Police Department’s Distinguished Service Award (2012). He also received a Commendation from FBI Director Robert Mueller (2010).

Greg served with the U.S. Air Force Reserves, 349th Air Mobility Wing, 82nd Aerial Port Squadron, Travis Air Force Base (1994-2000).
