Subpoena Police Records

Our Subpoena Service process will be changing, effective May 18, 2026. See below for additional details.

Prior to May 18, 2026 our process remains the same:

A non-refundable $15.00 processing fee is required before a subpoena for records can be served on the Sacramento Police Department. This fee must be paid in person to the City Revenue Division located on the 1st floor of New City Hall at 915 I St.

Once the service fee has been paid, the subpoena and the receipt for payment of the fee must be hand delivered to the Sacramento Police Department’s Court Liaison Office located at 300 Richards Blvd. Enter the lobby on the first floor and use the phone provided to dial the Court Liaison Unit, a speed dial option and an employee will assist you. Security is also available to further direct you.

Subpoenas cannot be mailed, faxed or dropped off directly to any other location other than the Sacramento Police Department facility located at 300 Richards Blvd. For additional questions or assistance with the subpoena process for police records contact the Court Liaison Unit at 916-808-0303. You may mail your subpoena, along with a check for the $15.00 processing fee made out to the City of Sacramento, to the following address:

Sacramento Police Department

Subpoenas Duces Tecum (SDT)

Effective May 18, 2026, Subpoenas Duces Tecum (SDT) requiring the production of documents, must be personally served at the Sacramento Police Department's Public Counter located at:

5770 Freeport Blvd, Suite 100
Sacramento, CA 95822
Open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • Exception: City Observed Holidays
  • Public Counter/Records Phone number: 916-808-0620

The only two exceptions to the personal service requirement are DMV Admin Per Se subpoenas, which may be sent by first-class mail [per VC § 14104.5(b)] and State of California Administrative subpoenas, which may be sent by certified mail with return receipt [per GC § 1145.20(b)].

A non-refundable $15.00 processing fee is required at the time of service. The fee can be paid by cash, check, or money order made out to the Sacramento Police Department.

All SDTs served directly to the Court Liaison Unit after May 15, 2026 will be denied due to improper service per CCP § 1987(a), PC § 1328, and CCP § 2020.220(b). This change only applies to SDTs; all appearance subpoenas will continue to be served through our Court Liaison Unit (see 'Personal appearance subpoenas' section below).

If both personal appearance and document production are being sought, two separate subpoenas need to be served – one to the Court Liaison Unit and one to the Public Counter – each including the $15.00 processing fee.

Additional fees, as provided for in Cal. Evidence Code § 1563, may also be due before any item(s) are provided in response to a subpoena. Information on fees commonly associated with record production subpoenas can be found below.

The Public Counter staff cannot provide updates or information related to subpoena status.

For SDT subpoenas, service by email, mail, and/or fax are not accepted.
