Jamillah's Story

Why did you come to the Financial Empowerment Center?

I came to the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) because I planned to purchase a home in the next 1-2 years and sought to become financially fit to do so. That meant improving my credit so I could qualify for better rates, and building up a downpayment. I got into CLTRE’s CLTRE Keeper First Time Homebuyer program, which referred me to a financial coach through the FEC. Through this process, I also learned that the FEC offers coaching support around personal finance as it relates to business as well, which I plan to pursue.

What financial achievements have you made since coming to the FEC?

Since coming to the FEC, I’ve paid off thousands of dollars of debt, increased my credit over 100 points in a little less than a year (from the very low 600s to the upper 700s), started saving regularly, and removed negative items from my credit report through negotiation. Before coaching, I’ve also established a business account to separate my business and personal finances.

Why and how has the FEC made a difference in your financial future and overall life? What has working with a Financial Coach done to help you, your family, etc.? What would you say to a friend or family member who was curious about how the FEC could help them?

While I’ve had some previous exposure to financial management, it was helpful having someone to be accountable to and to devise strategies with. That was probably the most impactful part of working with the coach. Having a financial expert help me come up with feasible, working strategies to target specific goals was very helpful and allowed me to stay on consistent and on track. With a plan AND accountability in place, I was able to get a lot more done with my coach’s assistance.

With a credit score now in the upper 700s (the highest it’s ever been) and significantly reduced debt, more options have opened for me, such as better approval odds for personal and business loans, and I am better positioned to purchase a home in the upcoming year. I highly recommend to anyone interested in receiving financial coaching through the FEC to go for it. While doing it on your own is possible, having that support and accountability from a knowledgeable professional can significantly reduce the effort and time it takes to accomplish the same things independently.

Do you plan to continue working with your Financial Coach to achieve specific goals? What goals? How can the FEC help you achieve these goals?

Yes, I plan to continue working with my financial coach to save a $10,000 downpayment to purchase a home in 2026. Once I accomplish that, I plan to save at least $10,000 in emergency funds; explore investment opportunities to continue to build my financial future; and receive business-related personal finance coaching with the FEC to become a stronger, more fiscally sound entrepreneur.
