Anson's Story

Why did you come to the Financial Empowerment Center?

(What circumstances were you struggling with, and/or what goals did you have that led you to the FEC?)

At the time, I was going through a lot of spending, but I wasn’t accounting for savings and earnings that I was receiving. What led me to the FEC in the end was that it was a free opportunity to get advice to support longer term goals and for tips I could use in the moment to break things down.

What financial achievements have you made since coming to the FEC?

(reduced debt, improved credit, built savings, established accounts, etc.)

I was able to first establish some more accounts and navigate how my potential retirement could go at a younger age. I was simply putting money away at the time but wasn’t necessarily putting it toward anything. Later on, other financial issues occurred, but I was able to slowly navigate through it with the counselor.

Why and how has the FEC made a difference in your financial future and overall life? What has working with a Financial Coach done to help you, your family, etc.? What would you say to a friend or family member who was curious about how the FEC could help them?

I think it was nice to express my financial frustrations with someone who was willing to listen and support me. I’ve learned to tell myself that it is ok to go through various situations if there are also ways to work through it and make sure that the major issues are being resolved. To friends or family, I’d recommend them to check out FEC if they are completely unsure about where to even start, and that is simply the best way to start. I’m sure everyone has some form of keeping track, but FEC financial coaches can help break things down way more once tackling the larger pieces at hand.

Do you plan to continue working with your Financial Coach to achieve specific goals? What goals? How can the FEC help you achieve these goals?

Now, it is figuring out how to save up and “bucket” my money so that I can spend for things that come up. I think I am still in the learning process and trying my best to navigate so many situations, but I am trying to be open and willing to try new things. My FEC coach can support me by making sure that I am accountable to myself, and by being an open listener who helps me navigate “mistakes” or “failures” that come down the road.
