Running for Sacramento City Council

Upcoming Elections for Sacramento City Council

June 2, 2026 - An election will be held for council districts 1, 3, 5, and 7. The nomination period is anticipated to be February 9, 2026, through March 6, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. In accordance with California Elections Code, a nomination petition may not be issued until the nomination period starts.

Who Can Run for City Council?

Any member of the public who meets the requirements below may run for public office in the City of Sacramento. Candidates must:

  • Be at least eighteen years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of California
  • Be a registered voter and a resident within the district the candidate seeks to represent for not less than 30 days preceding the date of filing candidate papers. The City Clerk shall confirm the voter registration will be verified before issuance of the official nomination petition. For the 2026 election candidates must be residents of Council Districts 1, 3, 5, or 7 to be a candidate to represent that district.

How to Run For City Council

  • Complete a Candidate Voter Registration Confirmation Form and return it to clerk@cityofsacramento.org. You may either download the form and open in Adobe and sign using a certificate or print, sign and upload a copy.
  • Make an appointment to ask questions or pick up a nomination paper.
