Frequently Asked Questions

1. I have a small arts & cutlure organization; can I apply for more than $5000?

Answer: Arts & culture organizations with small budgets may be rewarded up to a maximum of $5,000. Note awarded organizations cannot receive an award that exceeds 50% of their adjusted operating income. For example, if your adjusted operating income is $2000, the maximum reward amount you would be eligible to receive would be $1000.

2. I am applying as an organization using a fiscal sponsor, can my fiscal sponsor complete my application on my behalf?

Answer: No, fiscally sponsored organizations will need to apply for themselves and provide all the requested information within the application. Fiscal sponsors will need to provide their information to their sponsored organization, so that the applicant can input their Fiscal Sponsor’s information in the appropriate fields.

3. Can my organization use the grant fund to pay staff salaries?

Answer:  Yes, SOSF funds can be used for paying staff salaries and wages.

4. Can I spend the grant award on travelling to a conference in LA?

Answer: No, grant awards cannot be used for travel expenses.

5. My organization focuses on traditional dances from Mexico, can we apply?

Answer: Arts and culture organizations specializing in preserving a cultural artform or tradition are encouraged to apply. Please see the guidelines for more eligibility requirements. 

6. My organization uses our director’s home address, which is located in a county outside of Sacramento, can we apply?

Answer: This grant requires that organizations have a primary address located within Sacramento County. Applications listing a primary address outside of Sacramento County will be considered ineligible.

7. Can an afterschool art club apply?

Answer: Schools, including student programs, college or university-funded programs, schools of the arts, and programs that are embedded in and supported by public or private schools or their nonprofit funding arm are ineligible for this program.

8. I am an individual artist, can I apply for this grant?

Answer: Individual artists are ineligible to apply for this grant.

9. I am an individual artist, can I apply for this grant using a fiscal sponsor?

Answer: The Small Organization Sustainability Fund is intended for organizations. Individuals cannot apply using a fiscal sponsor.

10. Can we apply for this grant if we are an artist collective with no legal entity?

Answer: Established artist collectives with the ability to show the history of public programing are eligible to apply only if they are applying with an eligible fiscal sponsor.

11. Are we required to apply for a Federal Unique Entity ID number? 

Answer: Organizations are not required to have a Federal Unique Entity ID number for the Small Organization Sustainability Fund.

12. Do we have to be tax-exempt to apply for this grant?

Answer: No, established organizations without tax-exempt status that meet all other eligibility requirements can apply with an eligible fiscal sponsor.

13. Is documentary filmmaking considered arts and culture?

Answer: Organizations whose primary mission or purpose is focused on film and media such as documentary filmmaking may be eligible if they meet all other eligibility requirements.

14. Can we apply for multiple $5k grants?

Answer: No, eligible organizations may only apply for one Small Organization Sustainability Fund grant.

15. If we are selected for the Small Organization Sustainability Fund grant, are we also eligible for future City of Sacramento grants?

Answer: While it is not a standard practice that organizations may only receive one grant from the City, some grants may seek to expand the pool of grantees by targeting organizations that have not already been funded. We recommend checking the guidelines for future grant opportunities for any restrictions.

16. What is the “spending window” for the funds if our organization is awarded the grant?

Answer: The grant funds must be used between the time of contracting and January 31st, 2027. Reporting will be due after the expense window closes. The contract term will end on March 31st, 2027.

17. Can organizations outside of the City of Sacramento, but within Sacramento County Apply?

Answer: Yes, this grant opportunity is for any eligible arts or culture organization within Sacramento County.

18. We are a nonprofit who works with seniors. We use cultural traditions, food, and dance celebrations plus arts and crafts in traditional styles but with recycled materials, can we apply?

Answer: This is dependent on the organization’s primary purpose. Only organizations with a mission or primary purpose and programs which center arts and culture are eligible. Organizations which integrate art and culture as a secondary support for a different primary mission or purpose are ineligible.

19. We are a project driven organization with very little overhead costs; how do we calculate our adjusted operating income?

Answer: The application asks for you to include your fiscal year 2023 or 2024 revenue total. This would include any monetary funds donated or earned which is used for the organization's operations. In-kind contributions are generally NOT recognized as revenue unless contributions meet specific conditions. We recommend reviewing the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles outlined by the Financial Standards Accounting Board for more information.

20. What financial documentation is required to apply?

Answer: The application will ask that you provide detailed information about your revenue and expenses in narrative form and certify that all information is true and correct.
