Juan is an evolutionary ecologist with a strong interest in understanding how species interactions structure ecological communities. Over the last decade, he worked in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, investigating various aspects of the evolution and ecology of mutualisms, and through his work, he now attempts to apply this knowledge to help create better-connected and more robust interactions within communities. Dr. Ruiz Guajardo earned his Master’s in Applied Ecology to Conservation Biology from the University of East Anglia (England), his PhD in Evolution and Ecology from Edinburgh University (Scotland), and was a postdoctoral research fellow and a research project scientist at University of California in Davis. Since 2022, Juan Carlos has served as a community ambassador helping the Neighboring Development Action Team of the City of Sacramento to communicate more effectively and better serve the Hispanic communities across the Sacramento region. His passion for social activism, acting and singing has moved Dr. Ruiz to participate and collaborate with non-profits, cultural organizations, theatre companies and artistic projects seeking to establish art as a vehicle for education, inclusion and to challenge negative stereotypes and discrimination.
