Music Census and Regulatory Review

The City of Sacramento has released the results of its Music Census and Regulatory Review, a survey to better understand the present lived experience of people in the music community and their contributions to the creative economy in the capital region. Nearly 1,400 people from the music community responded to the survey, which was open October through November 2022.

The census, administered by Sound Music Cities, an Austin-based provider of music ecosystem studies and music census work, was carried out in partnership with the City of Sacramento Department of Convention and Cultural Services, the Office of Arts and Culture and more than 50 local community engagement partners.

“The findings of the Music Census and Regulatory Review reinforce a lot of what we’ve been hearing anecdotally from the music community in recent years,” said Megan Van Voorhis, Director of Convention and Cultural Services for the City. “But it also gives us a concrete direction for where our energies are best spent to support the local music industry’s recovery – and thankfully there are resources available to act on the findings.”

As a follow up to the Music Census and Regulatory Review, Sound Music Cities is conducting a review of entertainment related sound in Sacramento. The findings will serve as the foundation for legislative and policy changes expected later this year. To build on earlier outreach, the City has launched a Feedback Form inviting residents, industry professionals, and community members to weigh in on the latest recommendations. The brief survey—designed to take five minutes or less—will help ensure final policies reflect real-world experiences and priorities across Sacramento’s neighborhoods and entertainment scene. The feedback form will be available until July 30, 2025.
