Project Overview

The City of Sacramento is expanding broadband internet access to over 4,000 residential units in underserved neighborhoods through the installation of essential fiber optic infrastructure. Aligned with the City’s Digital Strategy, this project aims to bridge the digital divide and deliver equitable, high-speed internet access, supporting economic opportunity, social inclusion, and public safety. Funded by CPUC grants and federal/state programs, the project will roll out in phases starting summer 2025, with focused outreach to property owners and residents to ensure successful implementation.

Why is this Project Happening?

The California Public Utilities Commission has funded broadband in underserved communities primarily to bridge the digital divide—the gap between those who have reliable internet access and those who do not. Here are specific reasons for this investment:

  • Economic Opportunity: Broadband access enables job searching, remote work, online business, and digital entrepreneurship. Communities without it face economic disadvantages.
  • Education: With the rise of online learning, students in areas without reliable internet are at a serious disadvantage compared to their peers.
  • Healthcare Access: Telehealth services rely on broadband, especially important in rural areas where medical facilities may be far away.
  • Public Safety and Emergency Services: Reliable broadband enhances communication for first responders and enables better coordination during emergencies.
  • Government and Civic Engagement: Access to government services and participation in digital democracy (e.g., accessing voting info or attending virtual town halls) requires internet access.

Timeline of the Project

We have divided this project into three phases: Design, Construction, Residential Connection. Property owners and tenants will be contacted as part of the process.

We will inform the community of up-to-date information on route adjustments and potential disruptions.

How Will This Benefit Residents?

If you are a resident of one of the identified neighborhoods, Fidium of Consolidated Communications (CCI) will contact you for fast and reliable broadband service. If you are a resident beyond the project sites there are benefits including

  • Economic Growth & Innovation: As more people gain online access, the labor force becomes more skilled and productive, contributing to a stronger, more innovative economy.
  • Public Health & Safety: Improved access to online health information and services can reduce strain on emergency systems and promote healthier communities overall.
  •  Social Stability: Reducing inequality helps create more stable and cohesive societies, decreasing crime rates and increasing economic resilience.
  • Market Expansion: Businesses benefit from access to new customers and talent pools, supporting growth in e-commerce, education tech, and remote work platforms. In essence, broadband expansion is not just an infrastructure upgrade—it's a foundation for equity, opportunity, and inclusive growth.
