Purchasing and storing paint

Paint is one of the most common household hazardous materials sitting in a garage. It is also one of easiest materials to recycle.  When you start a painting project consider the following:

Buy it right. Purchase only what you need. Your local paint retailer can help select the correct volume of point for your project

Store properly. Paint will last longer when stored properly. For best results:

  • Cover the opening of the paint can with plastic wrap and securely seal the lid so the paint won't dry out.
  • Write the room name on the lid for future touchups.
  • Store cans indoors where they won't freeze or get wet.
  • Be sure to choose a safe location out of the reach of children and pets.

You can drop-off at one of the Household Hazardous Waste Facilities or donate the paint to the ReUse store located at the City of Sacramento's HHW facility.
