What is Sustainability Starts with Us?

"Sustainability Starts with Us" is a city-wide campaign dedicated to advancing climate equity and fostering a culture of sustainability throughout Sacramento, in line with the City’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

This campaign is part of the Office of Climate Action & Sustainability's work to demystify sustainability and climate action, partner on inclusive community engagement, and collaborate on meaningful action. We aim to sustain the city of Sacramento as a thriving, resilient community, especially in our historically disinvested communities where the effects of climate change on residents are most challenging.

We recognize that achieving sustainability requires sustained commitment from each of us, and will greatly benefit each of us and generations to come. We hope to empower all Sacramento community members to take impactful steps towards addressing climate change alongside the ongoing efforts led by the City.

Make Your Mark Community Painting

"Make Your Mark" is a community art project aimed at promoting climate action in Sacramento. Recognizing that sustainability requires collective effort from all of us, the Office of Climate Action and Sustainability invited the community to contribute to a large-scale abstract painting.

Utilizing cool-colored, upcycled paints to symbolize heat-mitigating and emission-reducing tactics, the project had a dual purpose: first, to visually depict rapid extreme heat rise in Sacramento, and second, to educate and empower communities about the various ways to address it together.

Under the guidance of Artist in Residence, Taner Pasamehmetoglu, individuals from all across Sacramento came together to symbolically make their mark against extreme heat. The project's reach extended from the ECOS Earth Day event in Southside Park to the Hagginwood Spring Family Social and Back to the Boulevard.

Through this time-lapse video, the collective efforts of all participants are showcased, capturing the energy and commitment of the community.
